Trinidad and Tobago Pro Bowl
The Trinidad and Tobago Pro Bowl, or commonly known as the Digicel Pro Bowl, is a knockout football tournament for teams in the Pro League. The competition is played during November and December each season. The Pro Bowl began without a sponsor in 2004 under the name of Pro League Pro Bowl for the first two editions. It was not until 2006, when Courts Trinidad and Tobago Limited began providing monetary prizes, that the tournament had its first sponsor. Following a pullout by Courts in 2009, Digicel became the new branding partner of the competition.
The tournament has been dominated by San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection in its first six years. The competition has served as a continuance of the rivalry between the two clubs with W Connection claiming two titles each.[1] Caledonia AIA became the first club besides San Juan Jabloteh or W Connection to claim the title in 2008. Joe Public became the second club in 2009 after defeating Caledonia AIA on penalty kicks.[2]
Format
As of the 2009 edition, all Pro League teams based on the island of Trinidad qualified for the competition. Seedings were based on each team's finish in the 2009 season. The bottom four teams entered the tournament at the Qualifying round. Whereas, the top six teams in the league were automatically placed in the Quarterfinals.[3]
In addition, starting in 2009, Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene announced that the prize money for the winner will be determined by the players, the clubs and the communities. With this programme the communities are expected to adopt the clubs and pledge their support to them during the tournament. The prize money will be the amount received from gate receipts and TT$100,000, courtesy of tournament sponsors Digicel.[4]
All matches will be played over two 45 minutes halves, and in the process the match is drawn at the end of regulation time, penalty kicks shall determine the winner.[3]
